Thunderhead (Arc of a Scythe #2) by Neal Shusterman Book Review (SPOILERS)

Monday, 9 September 2019

Thunderhead, the sequel to Scythe, follows the journey of both Citra and Rowan in the year following Citra's ordain as a junior scythe. Citra herself wants to change the Scythedom with the help of Scythe Curie. Rowan has gone rouge, taking out all the corrupt scythes by fire under his new found identity "Scythe Lucifer", and is top of the Scythedom's wanted list. But danger is lurking and there's a plot to kill Citra, and the Thunderhead realises it might not know everything it thinks it does.

I LOVED this book. It was fast paced and there were twists and turns throughout that I genuinely didn't see coming.

The writing was good - same as the first book, descriptive but overly so; enough to build a vivid world but just the right amount to leave things up to your own imagination. One of my biggest pet peeves is when authors are TOO descriptive and too granular that it leave little to your own imagination. Shusterman's writing style is one of my favourites - easy to follow along and not overly complicated.

The plot was fun, if not a little exaggerative - Goddard being brought back to life in Tyger's body was a little over the top, but it was a twist I didn't see coming, but thinking back, all the clues were there!

I loved the development of Citra & Rowan and who they have become in their first year after the first book ends - Citra has developed into a strong and respected scythe despite being new to it all. Rowan on the other hand, has gone on a journey of taking out all the bad scythes, and whilst he is technically breaking all the rules, you kinda-sorta sympathise with him.

As a side note, I REALLY likes the Thunderhead's journals at the end of each chapter; a larger entity that overlooks all the bad things happening in the scythdom with very little control of helping, and coming to terms with that and accepting that it cannot interfere.

I genuinely cannot wait until November when the third book, The Toll, is released. Thunderhead ended on such an amazing cliffhanger and I cannot wait to see how everything pans out and what the fate of the characters will be.

Verdict: ★★★★★
